Mail-in Ballot Do’s + Don’t

The rules and style of ballots vary by state but here are some basics to look out for. Any minor error(s) can give reason to not count your vote.

Don't provide a new address on your ballot. If you have moved you must register your new address and cannot update it yourself on your ballot.

Don't write a different version of your name. For example, shortening Alexander to Alex.

Be mindful of your signature, it must match the signature on your voter registration card and make sure it's written in the right spot.

Leave areas that need to be unmarked, unmarked.

Use a black or blue pen.

If it says fill in the oval, fill in the oval, don't circle, or use a check mark instead.

Properly seal — do not use tape.

Have your witness available.

If you make a mistake, don't worry. You can request a replacement ballot by phone. (But that might take time to process, so consider working on your ballot early!) If you do make an error or miss the deadline, be sure to reference FiveThirtyEight’s state-by-state voting guide to find the closest in-person voting location.
