JH Curio Cabinet 11

Our semi-regular roundup of JH curiosities — things we saved, shared, or talked about this month.

01. EPHEMERAL COLOR THEORY

Exhibit A:
If you can't decide between a green trio of ARTICHOKEEAMES, and PATINA, may we direct your eyes to considering layer cake as art, interpreted in an apropos palette?

Exhibit B:

If the ethereal AKOYA is your staple, would you like to read about this opalescent sea slug?

Exhibit C:
If you're into COMPOST, might we suggest this high-concept inflatable chair?

02. SONIC JOURNEYS

David Darling & The Wulu Bunun;

Dubbing this the summer of Bossanova-as-soundtrack

03. COOL SIPS

Accidentally assembled a tome of beverage inspiration as a refreshing antidote to summer's heat, i.e.:

  • Attempting our own take on this rhubarb tonic from London’s A Bar With Shapes for a Name
(rhubarb stalk-as-stirrer is really driving the concept home.)

  • Reveling in the discovery of Menthe a l’eau, or “peppermint water,” a cooling French summer elixir of minty syrup cut with ice (found in this book but more iterations can be found online).

  • Into the martini lineup at NYC’s Anyway Cafe, including the oddly intriguing “borscht Martini—beet vodka and dill vodka, sprinkled with Himalayan pink salt and crushed herbs, a pungent, tangy punch in a frosty glass."

  • A new LA spritz stop, The Capri Club, is destined to be our summer staple.

04. OBJET OF NOTE

While we’re on the topic of hydration, would happily sip any of the above from the stunning vessels by Peter Ivy

05. PAGE TURNERS

Devouring Anne Truitt's Yield — the third and final installment in the artist’s published journals, each chronicling a different proverbial life chapter.

And speaking of life experience as muse…currently digging into this (and recommend this review of it as well).

06. GALLERY-GOERS

07. CONSIDERATIONS

In conclusion, an a la carte menu of notable findings:

• A podcast on the memory-marking of music

• Anything can be a still life!

• “The Internet didn't kill counterculture — you just won't find it on Instagram

• Elizabethan cat collars

• "The more we control, the more we are alienated from that which we control.”

• Does a more perfect lip balm exist? We think not.
