Places: Noguchi Museum, NYC
Dispatches from a recent New York trip, and a visit to the Noguchi Museum, home to the sculptures, drawings, and furniture of the Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi.
There’s a sign when you enter: "The premise of Noguchi's life and work was the idea that the truest form of respect you can show another culture, traditional or otherwise, is participation: deep engagement, followed by creative adaptation."
It’s true—seeing Noguchi’s work in this context is as much about the way each piece interacts with the space it is in, with beautiful natural light streaming into a wide warehouse space, and a rare, tranquil presence you can feel as you walk around.
It's truly a spot to be still, to be inspired; there's a lot to be personally discovered in his minimal forms.
