Have a take...and don't suck!
Clinique just launched a global campaign celebrating personal accomplishment and inspiration, aiming to spark dialogue among millenials. #FaceForward encourages women to look toward what's to come, and give some sound advice to their future selves. I was asked (along with many other strong, smart, hard-working, daring, and adventurous women out there) the question, "If you could give advice to your future self, what would it be?"
My answer to this is vague, yet packs a punch: "Have a take...and don't suck!" To me this means follow your own unique vision and take what you do seriously. Put some effort into it.
In this business, it's really key to differentiate, and in my opinion the one thing that truly makes you different and that no one else has is your point of view. Stick by your guns and do you—not what you think other people want to see.
So what if you lose a few followers for posting that weird comment that only you thought was funny but no one else got? For the three (hopefully a few more) people that understood your joke, you just solidified your brand further in their minds.
For the second part of my advice, "Don't suck!" Or as my dad always says, If you're going to do something, do it well." (Side note: My dad is going to be so stoked that I quoted him on this. He is full of sayings, some in English and some in Hungarian, but all great advice.) Basically, just take your work seriously. Yes, it's fun and I couldn't imagine a cooler job, but it's still work. When taking on a project I always try to give it my all. So there you have it...some advice to my future self and for all of you!
